S.A. Richard

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Today, I am so happy to bring you, talented artist and dear friend, S.A. Richard.  This 24 year old California-born, is definitely one to admire. Shane began painting at the age of four, “I used what was around the house, which was mostly wood panels and acrylic house paint.”  He started painting things he wanted to look at, which is how his style began to develop, he categorizes it as pop-art.  Influenced greatly by rock and roll music and the California sun, his paintings reflect his life and the things he loves.

Although Shane may speak what’s on his mind and appear intimidating to some, his modesty and infectious smile reminds me of how down-to-earth he really is.  Of course, I would be downplaying him if I kept it at just his artwork, Shane is also a screenwriter.  Ladies, he’s single.  I took a visit to his studio in Venice, where he spends much of his time.  Legs crossed, thick brown hair parted to one side, he sits at his computer and consents to doing this interview.

What are you currently working on?

“All of my paintings are part of a big project I’m currently working on.  The name of the project is “I can only give you everything”. It’s a project about California. Loosely. And is a set of 50 paintings. It’s actually 5 sets of 10, but they’re all working toward the same end. It’s grown a little bit, now I’m doing about 100 drawings to go with it, which is going to be made into a book.”

Is there any preparation or ritual you do before you start painting?

“I don’t do any preparation.  It can be hard to paint when there’s a lot on my mind, but can also be therapeutic when I’m stressed.  I draw before, but most of the work is done while painting.  It just develops as I go.”

Do you paint people you know?

“I have, but then people feel ownership over the painting, and I don’t really want that.”

Are you attracted to the girls you paint?

He pauses, “I think, maybe.  Some girls I’ve painted I think are girls I’ve been interested in or have dated”

I notice your friend’s refer to your private part as “artcock”, why?

He laughs, “Some LA friends came to visit me when I lived in Oakland, and somehow my friend, Kevin Yang coined the phrase.  I guess it’s just a metaphor for my interest in the arts.”

What is your greatest indulgence?

“My dog, all free time after painting is spent on her.  Good restaurants, and good whiskey!”

I know you stated earlier you are working on your project, “I can only give you everything”.  Anything else we have to look forward to?

“Once the book is done this summer, then I will start showing again.”

If you’re interested in Shane’s artwork, I encourage you to visit his website here, become a fan on facebook here, and leave comments below.  Thank you Shane for agreeing do this interview, can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate your work, and your friendship. xo
